Edge Sealing: The Wyoming Difference
Most wraps fail at the edges, not in the middle. Wyoming wind catches an unsealed edge, freeze-thaw cycling expands and contracts the gap, water gets behind the vinyl, and the panel lifts. The vinyl in the middle of the panel can still be perfect while the edges are failing.
Edge sealing solves this. We apply 3M Edge Sealer 3950 along wrap perimeters and panel transitions on outdoor-stored trailers, fleet trucks, and any vehicle exposed to sustained Wyoming wind. This is a standard line item on relevant projects, not an upcharge.
On riveted aluminum bodies (common on older trailers and beverage box trucks), we go further and seal each rivet edge individually. The rivet itself isn’t the problem, the small perimeter around each rivet where vinyl edges meet metal is where failure starts. Per-rivet treatment adds labor hours but makes the difference between a 5-year wrap and a 5-month wrap on a riveted body.

Both are premium cast vinyl manufacturers used by professional wrap installers worldwide. 3M has slightly stronger cold-climate adhesive performance, which matters for Casper installs in winter. Avery has slightly superior color saturation for photographic imagery and large-format graphics. We carry both because some specific colors and finishes are only available from one manufacturer. We recommend based on application during the consult.
How do I know if a wrap shop is using cast or calendared vinyl?
Ask. Then ask for the exact part number. A shop using 3M Controltac IJ180, Avery MPI 1105, 3M Wrap Film 2080, or Avery SW900 will tell you the part number without hesitation. A shop using calendared vinyl often deflects with generic claims like “professional grade” or “industry standard”. The vinyl manufacturer’s part number on your written quote is the simplest way to verify quality before install.
What’s the difference between 3M IJ180 and 3M Wrap Film 2080?
IJ180 is print film, designed to be printed on with solvent or latex inkjet printers for graphic wraps with logos, photos, and brand designs. 2080 is color change film, factory-pigmented with no print needed. Both are 2-mil cast vinyl with similar durability ratings. Use IJ180 when you’re applying printed graphics; use 2080 when you’re applying a solid color or finish.
Why does overlaminate matter?
Print films alone don’t have enough UV protection for outdoor wraps in high-altitude markets like Casper. Overlaminate is a clear cast film applied over the print film that provides UV-stable protection, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance. A wrap without overlaminate fades visibly within 12 to 18 months in Wyoming. A wrap with proper overlaminate holds its color for 5 to 7 years.

Does the same material work everywhere on the vehicle?
Generally yes for vehicle exteriors, with some exceptions. Engine bay components, headlight lenses, and interior trim each have specialized films. We use the same exterior wrap material on hood, sides, rear, doors, and bumpers. Vertical surfaces (sides, doors) get the manufacturer’s “vertical” durability rating. Horizontal surfaces (hood, roof) get the slightly lower “horizontal” rating due to direct sun exposure.
What materials does Casper Wraps NOT install?
Calendared vinyl of any brand. No-name cast vinyl. Cast vinyl without UV-rated overlaminate on outdoor-stored vehicles. Vinyl over surface rust, peeling clearcoat, or unaddressed paint damage.
